... Ningyo joruri. There are two pieces with the same title. (1) Jidaimono. Five acts. Written by Kikaion. It was first performed at the Toyotakeza Theater in Osaka in January 1716 (6th year of Shotoku). According to the Ezukushi, the cast included Toyotake Ueno Shojo, Takemoto Kiyotayu, and Takezawa Gon'emon. Tsuyama Kaijuro plays Yoriie, and Fujii Kosaburo plays Wakasa no Mae. It depicts the rebellion of Minamoto no Yoriie and his maternal relative, Hiki Yoshikazu. Yoshikazu raises two courtesans in Kyoto, one of whom becomes Yoriie's wife as Wakasa no Mae, wielding the power of a maternal relative. Taking advantage of Asaji's love affair with Hatakeyama Shigeyasu, he marries her to Asahina Saburo, plotting to create discord between the Wada and Hatakeyama families and usurp the Shogun's family. ...
