A bacterium belonging to the Myxobacteriomycetes family. Unusually for bacteria, they gather in large numbers to form fruiting bodies that can be clearly seen with the naked eye, and many of them live in the soil. Fruiting bodies occur in the feces of herbivorous animals, and some live in water and parasitize fish and algae. Each cell is a slightly curved rod-shaped cell that glides along the surface of an object and spreads out thinly, but motile cells produce a slime, so they are called myxobacteria. 粘液細菌類Myxobacteriomycetesの細菌。細菌の中では珍しく多数集合して,肉眼ではっきり観察できるほどの子実体を形成するもので,多くは土中にいる。子実体は草食動物の糞(ふん)に発生し,水中にいて魚や藻に寄生するものもある。個々の細胞は多少曲がった桿(かん)状で,物の表面をすべるように動き,薄くひろがるが,運動性の細胞は粘質物をつくるので粘液細菌とよばれる。アルカンジウムArchangium,コンドロミケスChondromyces,ミクソコックスMyxococcus,ソランジウムSorangium,スポロシトファーガSporocytophagaなどの属が粘液細菌類に含まれる。
