A bacterium belonging to the Myxobacteriomycetes family. Unusually for bacteria, they gather in large numbers to form fruiting bodies that can be clearly seen with the naked eye, and many of them live in the soil. Fruiting bodies occur in the feces of herbivorous animals, and some live in water and parasitize fish and algae. Each cell is a slightly curved rod-shaped cell that glides along the surface of an object and spreads out thinly, but motile cells produce a slime, so they are called myxobacteria. Genera that belong to the myxobacteria include Archangium , Chondromyces , Myxococcus , Sorangium , and Sporocytophaga . Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
