Umemura Suizan

Japanese: 梅村翠山 - うめむらすいざん

1839-1906 A printing engineer and copperplate engraver from the late Edo to Meiji period.
Born November 21, Tempo 10. He went to Edo to study under the third generation woodblock engraver Kimura Kahei, while also researching copperplate etching methods. In 1871, he opened the copperplate engraving shop Keigandou at Kanda Benkeibashi and was also involved in producing official papers. In 1894, he founded a copperplate lithography company in Ginza. He passed away on June 18, 1906, at the age of 68. He was born in Kazusa (Chiba prefecture). His real surname was Ogawa, and he was commonly known as Hinokichi. His other pen name was Fushikanan. His works include "Famous Edo View of Sakurada."

天保(てんぽう)10年11月21日生まれ。江戸にでて木版彫刻師の3代木村嘉平にまなび,そのかたわら銅版腐食法も研究。明治4年神田弁慶橋に銅版彫刻の慶岸堂をひらき,官札製作にも従事。7年銀座に銅石版彫刻会社を創立した。明治39年6月18日死去。68歳。上総(かずさ)(千葉県)出身。本姓は小川。通称は亥之吉。別号に不識庵。作品に「江戸名所桜田之景色」など。
