1822‐56 German author. While helping edit the Kölner Zeitung, he published lyric poems and made a name for himself in German literary circles. In 1843 he traveled to England and became friends with Engels, and through his lyric poems and novels he spoke out against the misery of the proletariat's (the proletariat's) lives. In 1846 he moved to Belgium, where he came into contact with Marx, and worked as an editor for the literary section of Marx's Neue Rheinische Zeitung. He published many critical essays, and later traveled around Europe as an agent for a German trading company, eventually ending his life in the West Indies.
