German author. While helping edit the Kölner Zeitung, he published lyric poems and made a name for himself in German literary circles. In 1843 he traveled to England and became friends with Engels, and through his lyric poems and novels he spoke out against the misery of the proletariat's (the proletariat's) lives. In 1846 he moved to Belgium, where he came into contact with Marx, and worked as an editor for the literary section of Marx's Neue Rheinische Zeitung. He published many critical essays, and later traveled around Europe as an agent for a German trading company, eventually ending his life in the West Indies.

ドイツの著作家。《ケルン新聞》の編集に協力するかたわら,抒情詩を発表してドイツ文壇に名のりをあげた。1843年イギリスに渡ってエンゲルスと親交を結び,抒情詩や小説を通じてプロレタリアート(無産階級)の生活の悲惨さを訴えた。46年にベルギーに移住してマルクスと接触し,マルクスの主宰する《新ライン新聞》の文芸面の編集に従事した。多くの評論を発表し,その後ドイツの商社の代理業者としてヨーロッパ諸国を転々とし,西インド諸島で生涯の幕を閉じた。
