A decorative table attached to the wall of a large hall in an 18th-century upper-class hotel or country house. The base was made of marble, and a portrait sculpture, a desk clock, or a vase was placed on it, serving as an accent for the wall decoration. In the Rococo period, in particular, console tables were placed under large wall mirrors to enhance the effect of interior decoration. Console tables generally have no rear legs and only two front legs supporting the base, but sometimes four legs connected together with a crossbeam are also seen.
