The name Amida Buddha, with "A" added before or after the name as an abbreviation of Amida Buddha. It is said to have started when Chogen (1121-1206) of Todaiji Temple called himself Namu Amida Butsu. After that, it was used as Ben Amida, Ku Amida, etc., and was further shortened to Ben-A, Ku-A, etc. It is often used in the Jodo and Ji sects, and was also used by people in the entertainment industry, such as Kan'ami and Zeami. 阿弥陀仏号のこと,名前の前またはうしろに阿弥陀仏の略として「阿」をつける。東大寺の重源 (1121~1206) が南無阿弥陀仏とみずから名のったことに始るという。以後,弁阿弥陀,空阿弥陀などと使われ,それがさらに省略されて弁阿,空阿などと称されるようになった。浄土宗や時宗でよく使われ,また,観阿弥,世阿弥のように芸能関係者も用いた。
