The name Amida Buddha, with "A" added before or after the name as an abbreviation of Amida Buddha. It is said to have started when Chogen (1121-1206) of Todaiji Temple called himself Namu Amida Butsu. After that, it was used as Ben Amida, Ku Amida, etc., and was further shortened to Ben-A, Ku-A, etc. It is often used in the Jodo and Ji sects, and was also used by people in the entertainment industry, such as Kan'ami and Zeami.
