… Many Islamic scholars came to live in Timbuktu, and it became widely known not only as a trading city but also as a religious and academic city. The glittering pilgrimage of King Mansa Musa of Mali (1324-25) and the huge amount of gold he donated in Cairo on the way there turned the rumors of the "golden empire of Mali" that had already spread throughout the Mediterranean world into legend, and aroused in the northern Mediterranean society a desire to reach the "golden land" by sea without passing through North Africa, which was under Islamic control. This desire also became the impetus for the expedition to West Africa in search of gold, sponsored by Henry the Navigator. …
