The capital of Antioquia State in northwestern Colombia. It is also called Medellin. It is located about 250 km northwest of the capital Bogota, in the central Andes mountain range, in a small valley where the Porce River, a member of the Magdalena River system, flows, at an altitude of about 1,500 m. It is an old town that was built in 1675 as a mining center, and still exports gold and other products. Because it was geographically isolated in the mountains, development was hindered for a long time, but it began to develop rapidly after the railway was established in the 19th century, and it became a major distribution center for the surrounding coffee-growing areas. In the 20th century, industry developed due to the cheap availability of hydroelectric power, and it is now one of the country's leading industrial cities, and the textile industry in particular accounts for the majority of the country's textile production. Other major industries include food, woodworking, metals, automobiles, chemicals, and rubber. The population also increased rapidly with industrialization, and it is now the second largest city in the country after Bogota, with satellite cities such as Veyo, Itagui, and Envigado formed in the surrounding area. It is also the second most culturally important city after Bogota, and is home to many higher education and research institutions, including the University of Antioquia (1803), as well as museums, libraries, and theaters. The city has been modernized, and few of the old colonial buildings remain, but it is an extremely beautiful industrial city, known for its many flowers, and exports orchids and other plants. It is now a key transportation hub, with a railway, four roads, and an international airport. It is also a center for cocaine smuggling, which has become an international problem, and terrorist attacks in response to government crackdowns have been occurring one after another. Population: 1,431,462 (1985). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
