Hāla - Hāra (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. An ancient Indian lyric poet. The 17th king of the Satavahana dynasty (Andhra dynasty) in South India (around the 1st to 2nd century), he is called Hara Satavahana after the royal family name. He edited and wrote Sattasayi, a collection of 700 odes in Prakrit, a language known as Maharashtri, which is rich in pastoral lyric poetry. It is thought that Hara transposed the poems that were loved by the people into sophisticated verses. This is also seen as a kind of anthology, and shows the unique poetic style of Prakrit literature.

生没年不詳。古代インドの叙情詩人。南インドのサータバーハナ朝（アンドラ朝）第17代の王（1～2世紀ころ）で、王家の名を付してハーラ・サータバーハナとよばれる。マーハーラーシュトリーというプラークリット語で700頌(しょう)よりなる田園趣味豊かな叙情詩集『サッタサイー』の編著者。ハーラは民衆の愛唱した詩歌を、洗練された詩句に移したものと想像される。これは、一種の詞華集ともみられ、プラークリット文学独自の詩風を示した。
