A hot spring in Shiroishi City, southern Miyagi Prefecture. It is located at the southeastern foot of Mt. Zao, 7km northwest of Shiroishi Station on the Tohoku Main Line, and is easily accessible by bus. The spring contains saltwater and is salty, at 32-49°C. It was already known during the Keicho era (1596-1615), and was frequented by samurai as it was particularly effective in treating external injuries (sword wounds), earning it the reputation of being the "medicinal bath of Oshu." Today, it is frequented by farmers who come to take a cure, and it also serves as a base for hiking in Minami Zao. The village of Yajiro, 1.5km north, is a woodworker's village, and is known as the birthplace of "Yajiro Kokeshi dolls."
