Kamasaki [Hot Spring] - Kamasaki

Japanese: 鎌先[温泉] - かまさき

A hot spring in Shiroishi City, southern Miyagi Prefecture. It is located at the southeastern foot of Mt. Zao, 7km northwest of Shiroishi Station on the Tohoku Main Line, and is easily accessible by bus. The spring contains saltwater and is salty, at 32-49°C. It was already known during the Keicho era (1596-1615), and was frequented by samurai as it was particularly effective in treating external injuries (sword wounds), earning it the reputation of being the "medicinal bath of Oshu." Today, it is frequented by farmers who come to take a cure, and it also serves as a base for hiking in Minami Zao. The village of Yajiro, 1.5km north, is a woodworker's village, and is known as the birthplace of "Yajiro Kokeshi dolls." [Tanizawa Akira]

宮城県南部，白石市の温泉。蔵王山南東麓，東北本線白石駅の北西7kmにあって，バスの便がある。含ボウ硝食塩泉，32～49℃。慶長年間(1596‐1615)にはすでに知られており，特に外傷(刀傷)に効能があるため武士の利用が多く，〈奥羽の薬湯〉と評された。現在は農家の湯治客が多く，南蔵王への登山基地ともなっている。また北方1.5kmにある弥次郎集落は木地師の村で，〈弥次郎こけし〉の産地として知られる。【谷沢明】
