A film that emphasizes external actions (action) rather than characterization or psychological portrayal, and places emphasis on visual, fast-moving depictions. It usually sells the sense of speed and thrills. Westerns, serials, and gangster movies are typical examples, but in a broader sense it can also include slapstick comedies (comedies that feature aggressive, violent action to elicit laughter, especially those from the silent film era), and depending on how it is interpreted, most films can fall under the category. In Japan, the term is used in unique ways, such as war action and Nikkatsu action.
