Brahm - Otto Brahm

German theater reformer. Born in Hamburg. Studied German literature at university and worked as an editor and theater critic. Following the example of Antoine of France, in 1889 he and several comrades established a members-only organization called the Free Stage in Berlin, where they performed Ibsen's Ghosts and Hauptmann's Before Sunrise in matinee format. In 1894 he became director of the Deutsches Theater, and although he did not direct himself, he placed importance on direction and created an ensemble that thoroughly adopted a naturalistic acting style. When Reinhardt, who he had contracted as an actor, became famous as a director riding the trend of neo-romanticism and impressionism, he handed over the director's position to him and became director of the Lessing Theater in 1905. His ascetic attitude, which valued naturalness and rejected anything dramatic, was in contrast to Reinhardt's.

ドイツの演劇改革者。ハンブルグに生まれる。大学でドイツ文学を修め、編集者、劇評家として活動していた。1889年にフランスのアントアーヌの例に倣って、数人の同志とベルリンに会員組織の自由舞台を設立し、イプセンの『幽霊』やハウプトマンの『日の出前』をマチネー形式で上演した。94年にドイツ座の監督となり、自らは演出しなかったが、演出を重視し、自然主義的な演技様式を徹底化したアンサンブルをつくりあげた。俳優として契約したラインハルトが、新ロマン主義、印象主義的な時流にのる演出家として有名になると、彼に監督の座を譲り、1905年にレッシング座の監督となった。自然らしさを重んじ劇的なものを排除した禁欲的な態度は、ラインハルトと対照的であった。
