Kamacite (English spelling)

Japanese: カマサイト（英語表記）kamacite

Also called native iron. Of the nickel-iron alloys that make up iron meteorites, this refers to the metallic phase with a Ni content of 4-6%, and metallurgically corresponds to α-phase iron (body-centered cubic lattice). Its chemical composition is (Fe,Ni). It belongs to the cubic crystal system, has a specific gravity of 7.3-7.87, and a Mohs hardness of 4. It has a metallic luster, is ferromagnetic, and has perfect cleavage to {001}. It is steel gray to iron black, opaque, and appears white when polished. It is optically isotropic, with no reflective pleochroism or anisotropy. Of the iron meteorites, hexahedrite is composed only of kamasite.

自然鉄ともいう。鉄隕石を構成するニッケル‐鉄合金のうち，Niの含有量が4～6％の金属相を指し，冶金学的にはα相の鉄(体心立方格子)に相当する。化学組成は(Fe,Ni)。立方晶系に属し，比重7.3～7.87，モース硬度4。金属光沢をもち，強磁性で，へき開は｛001｝に完全。鋼灰～鉄黒色，不透明，研磨面では白色を示す。光学的に等方性で反射多色性，異方性ともにない。鉄隕石のうちヘキサヘドライトはカマサイトのみからなる。
