Goryeo Art

During the Goryeo period, Buddhism was made the state religion, and as a result, excellent Buddhist paintings, statues, and Buddhist implements were produced. While building on the traditions of the Silla period, new techniques from the Song dynasty were introduced, and new developments were seen as the result of influence from the art of the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

Currently, about 100 Goryeo Buddhist paintings are known to exist, and about 20 basic works that indicate the production date and the name of the artist have been confirmed. What is noteworthy is that the existing works were concentrated in the late Goryeo period, and there are no works that cover the entire Goryeo period. The oldest surviving work with a date inscription is a colored silk painting of Amitabha Tathagata (Bank of Japan) from 1286, which means that only works from the period when Goryeo was under the control of the Yuan Dynasty remain.

高麗時代は，仏教を国教としたので，すぐれた仏画，仏像や仏具類が制作され，新羅時代の伝統を踏まえながら宋代の新しい技術を導入し，また金･元代美術の影響もうけながら新展開をみせた。

　高麗仏画は，現在約100点ほどの作品の存在が知られ，その中に制作時期や画師の名を記した基本的な作品も約20点確認されている。そこで注目されることは，現存作品の制作時期が高麗時代末期に集中していて，高麗時代全体に及ぶものがみられず，現存作品で最古の紀年銘作品は至元23年(1286)の絹本著色阿弥陀如来像(日本銀行)で，高麗が元の支配下にあった時期の作品のみ残ったことになる。
