In contrast to the Five Mountains of Kyoto, the term refers to the five great Zen temples in Kamakura. The system was modeled on the official temple system of the Song Dynasty in China, and their rankings are as follows: (1) Kencho-ji Temple on Mount Kofuku, (2) Engaku-ji Temple on Mount Zuiroku, (3) Jufuku-ji Temple on Mount Kikoku, (4) Jochi-ji Temple on Mount Konpo, and (5) Jomyo-ji Temple on Mount Inari.
