Kamakura Five Mountains

In contrast to the Five Mountains of Kyoto, the term refers to the five great Zen temples in Kamakura. The system was modeled on the official temple system of the Song Dynasty in China, and their rankings are as follows: (1) Kencho-ji Temple on Mount Kofuku, (2) Engaku-ji Temple on Mount Zuiroku, (3) Jufuku-ji Temple on Mount Kikoku, (4) Jochi-ji Temple on Mount Konpo, and (5) Jomyo-ji Temple on Mount Inari.

京都五山に対し、鎌倉にある五つの大禅刹(ぜんさつ)をいう。中国宋(そう)の官寺制に倣って定められた制度で、その位次は、(1)巨福山(こふくざん)建長寺(けんちょうじ)、(2)瑞鹿山(ずいろくさん)円覚寺(えんがくじ)、(3)亀谷山(きこくさん)寿福寺(じゅふくじ)、(4)金宝山(こんぽうさん)浄智寺(じょうちじ)、(5)稲荷山(いなりさん)浄妙寺(じょうみょうじ)である。
