There is a genre of Japanese movies that could be called "ghost movies," and a wide variety of "ghost movies" have appeared on the screen, particularly as an indispensable part of the summer cinema. Among them, the "Yotsuya Kaidan" movies based on Tsuruya Namboku's "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" have been made in great numbers as a representative work. The oldest one recorded is Yokota Shokai's "Oiwa Inari" from 1910, which is thought to be the first "Yotsuya Kaidan" movie, followed the following year by Yoshizawa Shoten's "Yotsuya Kaidan." In 1912, Nikkatsu produced "Yotsuya Kaidan," starring Japan's first movie director and movie star, Makino Shozo and Onoe Matsunosuke, and since then, "Yotsuya Kaidan" movies have been produced one after another.
