The graphic magazine Life, which was launched in 1936, started out with the photographs of four photographers: Margaret Bourke-White, assistant editor of Fortune and already an established photographer; Alfred Eisenstaedt, who had worked for various German graphic magazines but had been pursued by the Nazis and had come to America; Thomas McAvoy, a news cameraman for Time; and Peter Stackpole, who was active in the San Francisco area. Life's photographs were expected to go beyond simple photographic commentary and sensationalism, and to have a deep understanding of the subject or theme and a brilliant interpretation. As one way of achieving this, the photo essay format was invented.
