…The system of Dunhuang as a gateway to the Western Regions from China was already established during the Western Han period, and it continued to play that role thereafter, and the name of Dunhuang was also known to the Western world as a city on the Silk Road. The oldest record of Dunhuang by people other than the Han people is the 2nd century Alexandrian scholar Ptolemy's Geography, in which Throana, listed as a city in Serica in Chapter 16, is considered to be Dunhuang. Dunhuang is located at the westernmost end of the Hexi Corridor and far from the Central Plain, so when the central government weakened, it often became independent or semi-independent, and sometimes united with nearby oasis cities to form small states. …
