...The first Tirthankara was called Rishabha (colloquial form Usabha), and Mahavira is said to be the last and 24th patriarch. The previous 23rd patriarch, Parshvanatha, lived about 250 years before Mahavira and is said to have led the Nigantha sect. If Mahavira improved upon Parshvanatha's teachings to establish Jainism, then Parshvanatha could be said to have been the founder of Jainism.
