Born July 26, 1931. Akita gymnast. Graduated from Tokyo University of Education and Keio University. Participated in the Olympic Games four times in a row: 1952 Helsinki, 1956 Melbourne, 1960 Rome, and 1964 Tokyo. Won five gold medals in total, winning twice in the team all-around, twice on the horizontal bar, and once on the vault. He made a great contribution to the development of gymnastics in Japan. At the Tokyo Games, he took the athlete's oath as captain of the Japanese team.
