...But it was after World War II that the sport saw remarkable development. Past international-level athletes include Kazuyoshi Oimatsu, Ryuichi Obitani, and Etsuko Inada, who were active as Olympic representatives before the war, Nobuo Sato, who won 10 consecutive Japanese championships from 1957, Miwa Fukuhara, who placed 5th at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics, Minoru Sano, the first Japanese to place 3rd at the 1977 World Championships, and Emi Watanabe, who placed 3rd at the 1979 World Championships and 6th at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics. In recent years, Midori Ito (1989 World Championship winner, 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics silver medalist) and Yuka Sato (1994 World Championship winner) have shown remarkable success on the international stage.
