Mount Hotaka

Japanese:
Mount Hotaka

Located on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, this mountain is the central mountain in the southern part of the Northern Alps. It is also called the Hotaka mountain range. It is a collective name for the mountains that run north and south from Okuhotakadake (3,190 meters), the highest peak of the Northern Alps, to Kitahotakadake (3,106 meters), Karasawadake (3,110 meters), Okuhotakadake, Maehotakadake (3,090 meters), and Nishihotakadake (2,909 meters). Hotaka Shrine, mentioned in the Engishiki (Completed in 927), is located in Azumino City in the Matsumoto Basin, but it is located in a position overlooking the Northern Alps to the west, and it is likely that in ancient times the entire Northern Alps were called Hotaka. On the east side of Okuhotakadake is Karasawa Cirque, a glacial landform surrounded by Kitahotaka and Maehotaka, where a colorful tent village appears in summer as a base for climbing Mt. Hotakadake. The traverse route from Karasawa to Mt. Yarigatake (3,180m) in the north, passing through Okuhotaka and Kitahotaka, is a typical course in the Northern Alps, and includes the difficult Okireto along the way. In addition, Takidani on the west side of Mt. Kitahotaka is known for its nearly vertical rock walls and rock climbing. Yasushi Inoue's novel "Hyoheki" (The Ice Wall) was inspired by an actual accident that occurred on Mt. Maehotaka. The first person to climb Mt. Hotaka was British engineer William Gouland (1842-1922) in 1880 (Meiji 13), and the first Japanese to successfully reach the summit of Mt. Maehotaka was Udono Masao in 1905 (Meiji 38). By the late 1970s, winter climbing of even the more difficult routes had been almost completed, showing that it was a very popular mountain range. A ropeway runs from Shinhotaka Onsen on the Gifu side to Sengokudaira (2,156 meters) on the middle slope of Nishihotakadake, and from here it takes about four hours to reach the summit of Nishihotakadake.

Mount Hotaka
Okuhotakadake is the highest peak in the Northern Alps and is the center of the Hotaka Mountains. At 3,190m above sea level, it is the third highest peak in Japan after Mount Fuji (3,776m) and Mount Kita (3,192m). Many climbers aim to reach the summit during the summer season.
