A trade route linking the oases of Central Asia. Also known as the Silk Road. The shortest route connecting the eastern and western civilizations, passing from China through Turkestan, the Iranian Plateau, and Mesopotamia. Nomads often intervened along this trade route in an attempt to profit from it, but from the 8th century onwards Islamic forces advanced along it and it came under their control. As Islamic forces expanded, trade routes were established across three continents, including Africa.
