Mountaineer. Born in Tokyo. In 1919 (Taisho 8), he entered the preparatory school for economics at Keio University. In 1921, modern mountaineering techniques were introduced to Japan when Maki Aritsune returned to Japan. Together with Maki and others, he climbed mainly Mt. Hotaka, and also introduced foreign mountaineering literature and worked to establish mountaineering philosophy, exerting a great influence on the mountaineering world. He died in a fall on the north ridge of Maehotaka in March 1928. His excellent philosophy can be seen in his posthumous works such as "Mountain" and "Senshosha" as well as in the "Complete Works of Oshima Ryokichi."
