Polymers with catalytic properties. Catalysts are substances that act as intermediates in chemical reactions, but they have characteristics that are unique to them because they are polymers (large molecules). First, certain atomic groups and metal ions act as catalysts, but polymers can bind many such atomic groups and metal ions, which makes it easy for interactions to occur between these atomic groups, or between atomic groups and ions, and so on, and they may act as catalysts that differ from when these atomic groups or ions act alone.
