Tree porcupine

A general term for animals in the genus Coendo, order Rodentia, family Agrotrichidae. Members of this genus Coendou are widely distributed in South America, from Mexico through Central America to northern Argentina, and live in forests. The head and body length is 30-60 cm, the tail length is 33-48 cm, and the weight is 1-5 kg. The dorsal body color varies from yellowish brown to black, which acts as a protective color, and the ventral side is gray. The body is covered with thick, short spines. The tail is long, and the top of the tail is bare at the tip, which can be wrapped around objects. The front and back feet have strong, long claws. They are nocturnal and mainly live in trees, spending the day in thickets, tree holes, stumps, and holes in the ground. They also eat tree leaves, buds, branches, fruits, and sometimes underground stems. They breed from January to September, with a gestation period of 60 to 70 days, and usually give birth once a year, usually one baby. The baby is large, measuring 25 centimeters in length and weighing 300 to 400 grams. The spines of the newborn baby are flexible, but harden quickly. There are six species, including the Mexican tree porcupine C. mexicanus , which is found from Mexico to Panama, and the spiny tree porcupine C. spinosus, which is found from eastern Brazil to northern Argentina.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱齧歯(げっし)目キノボリヤマアラシ科キノボリヤマアラシ属に含まれる動物の総称。この属Coendouの仲間は、メキシコから中央アメリカを経てアルゼンチン北部までの南アメリカに広く分布し、森林にすむ。頭胴長30～60センチメートル、尾長33～48センチメートル、体重1～5キログラム。体色は、背面が黄褐色から黒色まで変化に富んで保護色になり、腹面は灰色である。体は太くて短い棘(とげ)で覆われる。尾は長く、先端の上面は裸出し、物に巻き付けることができる。前後足には強くて長い鉤(かぎ)づめがある。夜行性でおもに樹上で生活し、昼間は木の茂み、樹洞、切り株や地面の穴などで過ごす。樹葉、芽や枝、果実やときに地下茎も食べる。1～9月に繁殖し、妊娠期間は60～70日で、1年に1回、普通1子を産む。子は大きくて体長25センチメートル、体重300～400グラムもある。生まれた子の棘は柔軟であるが、すぐに堅くなる。メキシコからパナマに分布するメキシコキノボリヤマアラシC. mexicanusや、東ブラジルからアルゼンチン北部に分布するトゲキノボリヤマアラシC. spinosusなど6種がいる。
