Newly hatched chicken chicks. Raising day-old chicks is the most important part of poultry farming, but most chicks are artificially hatched, and chicken farmers are increasingly purchasing chicks rather than producing them themselves. Day-old chicks are transported by taking advantage of the 36-48 hour gap between hatching and their first feeding. The optimum time for raising chicks is around the spring and autumn equinoxes, but with the rapid increase in the number of chickens being raised, improvements have been made to chick-raising equipment and chick feed, making it possible to maintain a high rate of raising chicks throughout the year. Chicks are broadly classified according to their purpose: for meat, for eggs, and for both meat and eggs.

孵化したばかりの鶏の雛のこと。養鶏の作業のなかで初生雛の育成は最も重要な部分であるが，雛のほとんどは人工孵化によるもので，しかも雛は養鶏家の自家生産から購入に変っている。初生雛の輸送は，孵化後初めての餌付けまでに 36～48時間の空白があるのを利用して行われる。育雛の適期は発育上は春秋の彼岸前後であるが，飼育羽数の激増につれて育雛装置の改良，育雛飼料の改善が進み，年間を通じて高い育雛率を保てるようになった。雛は用途別に肉用，卵用，卵肉兼用などに大別される。
