Uṣas (English spelling)
In Hindu mythology, she is the goddess of dawn. She is said to be the daughter of Dyaus (the heavenly gods) and the sister of Ratri (the goddess of night), and is said to be the mother or lover of Surya (the sun). She is always a beautiful young woman, and is the most prominent of the goddesses in the Rig-Veda. She is the forerunner of the sun, repelling darkness, awakening living things, and promoting activity. In later mythology, she is overshadowed by Surya and loses importance.
