A machine tool that applies a rapidly rotating grinding wheel (grinding wheel) to a cylindrical workpiece to grind its outer circumference. It is mainly used to machine cylindrical shafts, stepped shafts, tapered shafts, etc. The main components consist of a bed, table, headstock, tailstock, and grinding wheel head. The workpiece is supported and rotated between the headstock and tailstock on the table, and the table or grinding wheel is fed left and right (in the axial direction of the workpiece). The grinding wheel head moves in the radial direction of the workpiece to give the required depth of cut. A type of cylindrical grinding machine in which the wheel head and headstock can be rotated around a vertical axis, allowing tapered surfaces and end faces to be machined, and which is also equipped with an internal grinding device, is called a universal grinding machine. 高速回転する砥石車 (研削砥石) を円筒状の工作物に当て，その外周部を研削する工作機械。主として円筒軸，段つき軸，テーパ軸などの加工に用いられる。主要部はベッド，テーブル，主軸台，心押し台，砥石台から成り，テーブル上の主軸台と心押し台間で工作物を支持して回転させ，テーブルまたは砥石車を左右 (工作物の軸方向) に送る。砥石台は工作物の半径方向に移動し，所要の切込みが与えられるようになっている。円筒研削盤の一種で，砥石台と主軸台が垂直軸まわりに旋回できるようにして，テーパ面や端面も加工でき，さらに内面研削装置も付与したものを万能研削盤と呼ぶ。 (→研削盤 )
