Sarasa shrimp (English name: Rhynchocinetes uritai)

Japanese: サラサエビ(更紗蝦) - サラサエビ(英語表記)Rhynchocinetes uritai
Sarasa shrimp (English name: Rhynchocinetes uritai)
This beautiful shrimp (illustration) belongs to the family Pectiniidae of Crustacea, and lives in shallow rocky waters. It grows to about 4.5 cm in length, and when alive, it is transparent with complex reddish-brown stripes and a row of round white markings. The rostrum has 2-3 spines on the upper edge, 4-5 near the tip, and 8-11 spines on the lower edge. There is a joint at the base of the rostrum with the cephalothorax, which allows it to move up and down. This structure is a common feature of Pectiniidae and is not seen in other shrimps, but it is unclear whether it serves any ecological purpose.
