Potto - Potto (English spelling)

Japanese: ポットー - ぽっとー（英語表記）potto

A prosimian of the loris family of primates (illustration) that lives in the tropical rainforests from Guinea in West Africa to the eastern shore of Lake Victoria in East Africa. It has large, forward-facing eyes suited to stereoscopic vision in trees. On both the front and back legs, a large thumb is opposed to the other digits, and the second digit is significantly degenerate, making it convenient for grasping tree branches. There is a bony protrusion on the back of the neck that is used for intimidation and fighting. The head and body length is 34-41 cm in males and 36-42 cm in females.

西アフリカのギニアから東アフリカのビクトリア湖東岸にかけての熱帯降雨林に生息する霊長目ロリス科の原猿（イラスト）。樹上での立体視に適した，前に向いた大きな目をもつ。前後肢ともに，大きな親指が他の指と向かい合うようについていて，第2指は著しく退化しており，木の枝をつかむのにつごうがよい。くびの後ろに骨が突き出してできた突起があり，威嚇や闘いに用いられる。頭胴長は雄が34～41cm，雌が36～42cm。
