American jazz trumpeter and composer. He is one of the important figures in jazz history who led the transition from swing to bop in the modern jazz world of the 1940s. He sought to shift jazz from its popular music aspect to a more advanced and progressive style. He is also known for trying to incorporate Latin music rhythms into jazz. Influenced by Roy Eldridge (1911-1988), his trumpet playing style aimed for faster and higher notes and utilized highly advanced techniques. As a composer, many of his songs, including "A Night in Tunisia," are performed as jazz standards.
