Also called gum. A gummy substance obtained from the secretions of plants. Whereas so-called rubber (elastic rubber) is mainly hydrocarbon, this is a polymeric substance in which various polysaccharides (carbohydrates) are bonded in various proportions. It is a highly viscous liquid or solid at room temperature and softens when heated.
