Also called gum. A gummy substance obtained from the secretions of plants. Whereas so-called rubber (elastic rubber) is mainly hydrocarbon, this is a polymeric substance in which various polysaccharides (carbohydrates) are bonded in various proportions. It is a highly viscous liquid or solid at room temperature and softens when heated. Examples include gum arabic and gum tragacanth, and are used in glues, inks, paints, medicinal tablets, etc.

ゴムともいう。植物の分泌物から得られるゴム質。いわゆるゴム (弾性ゴム) が主として炭化水素であるのに対して，これは各種の多糖類 (炭水化物) がいろいろな割合で結合した高分子物質である。常温で強い粘性をもつ液体または固体で加熱により軟化する。アラビアゴム，トラガカントゴムなどがあり，糊，インキ，絵具，薬用錠剤などに使われる。
