A small Italian island 2km northeast of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. Its area is 15.75 km2 . It is known for Garibaldi, who contributed greatly to the Risorgimento, purchasing the island in 1855 and settling there. He returned to the island after the unification of Italy in 1861. He was later welcomed as a hero of the popular struggle in France and Britain, and led a volunteer army on an expedition to Calabria and northern Italy, but failed. In 1866, he was deported to Caprera, where he was placed under house arrest and spent the rest of his life. In 1907, his house and grave were designated a national monument.
