It is an animal of the Caudata order of the Amphibian class and the family Salamanderidae. It was discovered in 1911 (Meiji 44) on the Odaigahara Plateau of the Kii Peninsula, hence the name, and lives in the surrounding mountainous areas, Mt. Tsurugi and the Ishizuchi mountain range in Shikoku, and the Sobo mountain range in Kyushu. It is 13 to 18 centimeters long. Its back is black and unmarked, and its underside is slightly lighter in color. It lays eggs in the water near the source of the river in May, laying coiled egg sacs on stones or fallen trees. The eggs are 5 millimeters in diameter, with about 40 eggs in total, and most of the larvae overwinter and metamorphose the following year, feeding on insects, spiders, earthworms, etc. [Mitsuru Kuramoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
