It is a place for geisha and maiko in Kyoto's entertainment district to practice singing, dancing and music, and a venue for them to perform. In 1872 (Meiji 5), the Miyako Odori dance, which was held as a sideshow in support of the Kyoto Exposition, was so well received that the Gion Kobu entertainment district established a Kaburenjo on the west side of Shijo Hanamikoji Sagaru the following year, and has continued to hold the Miyako Odori every April ever since. In 1913, it moved to the east, and in 1935, it moved to its current location at 570 Minami-gawa Gion-cho, Higashiyama Ward. Inspired by this, other entertainment districts followed suit, and began to have their own Kaburenjo within their own brothels. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
