The capital of Afghanistan. Population 700,000 (1993). It is located on the southern side of the Hindu Kush Mountains, in the Kabul Basin at an altitude of 1,800m, along the Kabul River, a tributary of the Indus River. It is connected to Jalalabad and Peshawar via Tangi Qar to the east, Hazarajat via the Unai Pass to the west, Ghazna and Kandahar to the south, and Turkestan via the tunnel at Sarang Pass to the north. It has been a key transportation point since ancient times, and since Alexander the Great's eastern expedition in the 4th century BC, it has been invaded and ruled by the Kushan Empire, the Hephthalites, and other dynasties, and Buddhism and Hindu culture flourished there.
