Elle, A. - Elle

[France]
In France, Rodolphe Töpfer (1799-1846), who also influenced Bush, led the way, and G. Doret, who was a skilled caricaturist, and then Boutet de Monvel (1850-1913) illustrated Joan of Arc (1896) and other picture books, and finally French picture books dominated the world. Then Andre Herre and Eddy Legrand, who used hand-drawn stencils to color, and in the 1930s, Fyodor Rojankovsky and Nathalie Paran achieved success with fresh realistic styles using lithographs for Père Castor's Art Book. At the same time, Jean de Brunhoff (1899-1937) captured the world market with his Babar the Elephant, and during the war, when supplies were scarce, Samivel produced sophisticated picture books using two-color printing.
