Iga no Suigetsu

Japanese: 伊賀の水月 - いがのすいげつ

A kodan (traditional storytelling). It describes the incident known as the Igagoe vendetta, in which Watanabe Kazuma killed Kawai Matagoro, the enemy of his father (his younger brother in the true story), in Ueno, Iga Province. This story is called one of the three great vendettas in Japan, along with those of the Soga brothers and the Ako samurai, and is often performed in kodan (traditional storytelling). As it is performed with the assistance of Kazuma's brother-in-law Araki Mataemon, it is also called "Araki's heroic tale" or "Araki Mataemon." Although it is one of the favorite plays that has been passed down for generations in the Ichiryusai lineage, "The Thirty-six Killers" is fictional. [Yoshizawa Hideaki]

講談。渡辺数馬が父(実録では弟)の仇河合又五郎を伊賀国上野で討ち取った事件，いわゆる伊賀越の敵討を描く。この物語は曾我兄弟，赤穂義士の仇討とともに日本三大仇討と呼び，講談でもよく演ずる。数馬の義兄荒木又右衛門の助勢を中心として演じるので，《荒木武勇伝》または《荒木又右衛門》とも題する。一竜斎系統では代々受け継がれてきた得意の演目の一つであるが，〈三十六人斬り〉は虚構である。【吉沢英明】
