...Especially in recent years, as river improvements have progressed, it has become easier for the tributaries to rise, often resulting in abnormally high water levels near the confluence, as seen in the torrential rains of July 1972. For this reason, large-scale embankments have now been completed, with flood control at upstream dams such as Haji Dam (completed in 1974) set as the standard for a planned high water flow rate of 7,600 m3 per second at Ozekiyama Observatory (downstream of the confluence). Cormorant fishing, a seasonal feature of Miyoshi in summer, and the fog that occurs in Miyoshi on clear, early morning days in late autumn are both related to the wide surface of the Gono River.
