Spanish writer and critic. Born into a wealthy family, his father was a Basque immigrant from Cuba and his mother was the daughter of a Scottish-born British diplomat. When his father's sugar factory went bankrupt, he entered journalism at a young age and became part of the "Generation of '98." His ideological journey was extremely varied, first as a Nietzschian, then as a Kropotkin-style anarchist and syndicalist, and then as a leading theorist of the ultra-conservative "Spanish Movement." In the year the Spanish Civil War broke out, he was executed by firing squad by the Popular Front. His representative works include "Don Quixote, Don Juan, La Celestina" (1926) and "In Defense of the Spanish Spirit" (1934).
