Its area is about three times that of Japan and the fifth largest in South America. Its topography divides it into three major regions: the Andean highlands (Altiplano) above 3,500 meters above sea level, the eastern foothills of the Andes (El Valle) below that, and the eastern plains (Oriente). The Altiplano and El Valle regions each account for one-fifth of the total area, while the Oriente accounts for the remaining three-fifths.
