L'Avare - The Miser

A play by the French playwright Molière. A prose comedy in five acts. First performed in 1668. Harpagon, a stingy moneylender, wants to take a young woman, Marianne, as his second wife, but when he finds out that she is his son Cléant's lover, a strange love triangle ensues. Meanwhile, Harpagon's daughter, Elise, is secretly in love with the butler Barère, but her father wants to marry her off to the wealthy old man Anselme, so this love also faces difficulties. A servant steals a box of gold coins that the stingy Harpagon treasures for Cléant. On the condition that the box is returned, the son is finally able to marry Marianne. Furthermore, by chance, it is discovered that the butler and Marianne are siblings, and Anselm is their father, and Elise's love is also fulfilled. Along with creating the strong personality of Alpagon, the customs of the townspeople are vividly portrayed through a diverse cast of characters, including a veteran cook and coachman and a woman who works as a procurer.

フランスの劇作家モリエールの戯曲。五幕散文喜劇。1668年初演。吝嗇(りんしょく)な高利貸アルパゴンは年がいもなく若い女性マリアーヌを後妻に迎えようとするが、彼女は息子クレアントの恋人であることがわかり、奇妙な三角関係が生じる。他方、アルパゴンの娘のエリーズは執事バレールとひそかに愛し合っているが、父親は金持ちの老人アンセルムに嫁がせる意向で、こちらの恋も前途多難である。下男がクレアントのために、吝嗇なアルパゴンが宝としている金貨の箱を盗み出す。それを返すという条件で息子はようやくマリアーヌと結ばれる。また、巡り会いの偶然から執事とマリアーヌが兄妹、アンセルムがその父という関係が判明し、エリーズの恋も成就する。アルパゴンという強烈な個性の創造とともに、古株の料理番兼馭者(ぎょしゃ)、とりもち稼業の女など、多彩な人物を通じ町人階級の風俗が生き生きと描き出されている。
