Located in the southwest of the Russian Federation, it is the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia, which is part of the federation. From 1944 to 1957 it was called Stepnoy. Population 101,700 (1999). It is located on the north shore of the Caspian Sea, in the Ergeny Hills that rise to the west of the Caspian coastal lowlands, along the Belgorod-Stavropol main road and a railway branch. There are factories producing construction materials, concrete, wood processing, car repairs, leather, etc. It developed from a trading center for the Kalmyks, and in the early 20th century the district office was established there. There is a national livestock research institute, a national university, and a local history museum.
