Elista - Elista (English spelling) Элиста/Elista

Located in the southwest of the Russian Federation, it is the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia, which is part of the federation. From 1944 to 1957 it was called Stepnoy. Population 101,700 (1999). It is located on the north shore of the Caspian Sea, in the Ergeny Hills that rise to the west of the Caspian coastal lowlands, along the Belgorod-Stavropol main road and a railway branch. There are factories producing construction materials, concrete, wood processing, car repairs, leather, etc. It developed from a trading center for the Kalmyks, and in the early 20th century the district office was established there. There is a national livestock research institute, a national university, and a local history museum.

ロシア連邦南西部に位置し、同連邦に属するカルムイキア共和国の首都。1944～57年にはステプノーイСтепной／Stepnoyとよばれた。人口10万1700（1999）。カスピ海北岸、カスピ海沿岸低地西方に高まるエルゲニ丘陵に位置し、ベルゴロド―スタブロポリ間の幹線道路、鉄道支線に沿う。建設資材、コンクリート、木材加工、自動車整備、皮革などの工場がある。カルムイク人の交易中心地から発達し、20世紀初頭に郡役所が置かれた。国立畜産研究所、国立大学、郷土館がある。
