Khizr Khan, who had been allied with Timur and appointed by Timur as ruler of both Multan and the Punjab, occupied Delhi after the death of the last Tughluq king in 1413 and founded the Sayyid dynasty there, which ruled from 14 to 21 years. During the reign of the next king, Mubarak Shah (1421-34), the dynasty nominally escaped Timurid rule and briefly controlled the Punjab and the Doab region of northern India, but overall the dynasty was the weakest of the Delhi Sultanates, and at the end of its reign it was said in popular song that its territory extended from Delhi to Palam (where the airport is now located, south of Delhi). …
