An annual plant of the Amaranthaceae family, native to tropical Asia. Also known as globe amaranth. It was introduced to Japan long ago and is cultivated for decorative purposes. It is 50-80cm tall, well-branched, and has coarse hairs on the entire plant. The leaves are oblong, arranged opposite each other on short stalks, thick at the nodes, and reddish at the base of the petiole and the nodes. From summer to autumn, the stem branches at the top, and at the end of the stems, it bears a spherical flower head about 2cm in diameter. The flower head consists of many florets wrapped in two colored, winged parsleys. The florets have five linear sepals and five stamens, and the calyx is usually red, but there are also horticultural varieties that are sometimes deep purple, pale purple, or white.
