Kölln (English spelling)

...It can be said that this ``world city'' character has supported Berlin's position as Germany's number one city even after it was divided into East and West.
[From trading city to palace city]
The two towns of Berlin and Kölln (Alt Kölln), which are the origins of modern Berlin, first appeared in historical documents in 1237 and 1244. Located at the crossing of the Spree River on the trade route from Magdeburg and Leipzig to the Oder River, the two cities developed as commerce centers, unlike Spandau and Köpenick (which were merged into Berlin in 1912) which had strong military influences. They were integrated in terms of judiciary and administration in 1307, and joined the Hanseatic League in 1359, becoming the most important cities in Brandenburg.
