Denzaemon Emura

Japanese: 江村伝左衛門 - えむらでんざえもん
Denzaemon Emura

...A Chinese poet of the mid-Edo period. Born in Kyoto. His given name was Shu, his pen name was Kimisaku, and he was commonly known as Denzaemon, and Hokkai was his pen name. He was the second son of the Confucian scholar Ito Ryushu, and was adopted into the prestigious Emura family, a Confucian scholar family in Kyoto. He is known as one of three scholar brothers, along with his elder brother Ito Kinri and younger brother Seida Danso. Both the Ito and Emura families were taught in Neo-Confucianism, but it was not a family tradition to strongly preach Neo-Confucianism, and Hokkai also became a Confucian scholar in the Gujo Domain of Mino Province following in his adoptive father's footsteps, but his activities were more inclined towards Chinese poetry and prose than Confucianism. He did not show any outstanding talent in the composition of poetry or prose, but rather taught poetry to many students at his private school, Shijodo, and wrote a history of Chinese poetry from ancient times to the present, called Nihon Shishi (1771), and compiled a wide range of Chinese poems by people of the time, called Nihon Shisen (1774). His main activities were enlightening and literary, and he played a major role in the spread of Chinese poetry in the Kami-gata region.
