A general term for compounds represented by M I [BH 4 ], M II [BH 4 ] 2 , M III [BH 4 ] 3 , and M IV [BH 4 ] 4. In the formula, M I , M II , M III , and M IV represent monovalent, divalent, trivalent, and tetravalent cations, respectively. It was synthesized by Schlesinger in 1940, and since then, much research has been done on its synthesis, reactions, and structure, but there are still many unsolved issues. When M I is an alkali metal, it is an ionic crystal, lithium salts are orthorhombic, and all others are sodium chloride type with a face-centered cubic lattice.
