A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It is densely covered with reddish-brown, stalk-like glandular hairs, and was named after the color, which resembles a shrimp shell. In early summer, it produces pale pink, five-petaled flowers about 1.5 cm across. The fruits are aggregates that ripen to a red color and are edible. It grows widely from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is distributed in China and Korea. Japanese species were introduced to Europe and North America for ornamental purposes, and are now naturalized in roadsides, thickets, and sparse forests.
